FAQs
Find answers to your questions about pond design and builds, pond care and maintenance or any other aquatic service in our comprehensive frequently asked questions below. From specific pond service to general tips, we provide the expert insights you need to keep your pond pristine and thriving throughout every season.
General
What areas do you cover?
In the main for domestic customers we cover the West Midlands, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire regions.
Do we charge for visiting to provide estimates for work?
No. However, clients may have to wait till we have work in the area to visit. If clients want to pay for an urgent site visit then this can be arranged.
Do we sell Aquatic Plants?
Yes we are able to source Aquatic Plants and Coir Rolls.
Do we stock Aquatic Consumables?
No we do not stock Aquatic Consumables, like fish treatments and food. However, we do carry UV bulbs and done fittings. If we don’t have it with us, we are able to source them and arrange for items to be delivered direct to the client.
How long does it take to received an estimate for work?
Following our site visits we can take up to 2 weeks to send out the estimate, this does depend on the complexity of the work required.
Pond Design & Builds
How much does it cost to build a pond?
Costs vary depending on size, materials, and features. Smaller garden ponds may start from a few thousand pounds, while larger koi ponds or bespoke water features can be significantly higher due to structural work, filtration systems, and design complexity.
How long does it take to build a pond?
Most projects are completed within 2–8 weeks. Larger or more complex builds – such as reinforced concrete koi ponds or installations with advanced filtration – may take longer.
Do I need planning permission to build a pond?
In most residential settings, planning permission is not required. However, it may be necessary for listed properties, commercial sites, or large-scale landscaping projects. Always check with your local authority if unsure.
Can you upgrade or restore an existing pond?
Yes. Existing ponds can be fully refurbished, resized, or modernised with improved liners, filtration systems, raised walls, viewing windows, waterfalls, and lighting.
How deep should a pond be?
Depth depends on the pond type:
- Wildlife ponds: 45–60 cm
- Garden ponds: 60–90 cm
- Koi ponds: typically 1.2–1.8 metres Greater depth improves water stability and fish health.
What type of filtration system do I need?
Filtration is designed based on pond size and fish load. Systems may include mechanical filtration (debris removal), biological filtration (beneficial bacteria), drum filters for high-performance setups, and UV clarifiers for algae control.
Can you include features like waterfalls or windows?
Yes, ponds can be customised with features such as waterfalls, spillways, viewing windows, lighting, raised walls, and automated water systems to enhance both aesthetics and functionality.
Pond Care & Maintenance
Can ponds be used all year round?
A properly designed pond will operate throughout the year. In winter, systems may run at reduced capacity, and care should be taken to prevent the surface from fully freezing where fish are present.
Do ponds require electricity?
Yes, most ponds rely on electricity to power pumps, filtration systems, UV clarifiers, and lighting. Modern systems are designed to be energy efficient, and automated controls can help minimise running costs.
How do you stop pond water going green?
Green water is usually caused by algae blooms. This can be controlled through proper filtration, UV clarifiers, balanced fish stocking, and adequate aquatic planting. A well-designed system prevents most issues before they arise.
How often should a pond be cleaned?
Most ponds benefit from seasonal or annual maintenance, depending on size and fish stock. Typical servicing includes filter cleaning, debris removal, pump checks, and water testing. Heavily stocked koi ponds may require more frequent attention to maintain optimal water quality.
What maintenance does a koi pond need?
Koi ponds require more intensive maintenance due to higher fish loads. This includes regular filter cleaning, monitoring water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, pH), and ensuring sufficient aeration and circulation.
Do you offer pond maintenance services?
Yes, professional maintenance packages are available, including scheduled cleaning, filter servicing, equipment inspections, and water quality management to ensure long-term pond health.
Environmental Consultancy
What environmental services do you offer?
Environmental consultancy services can include habitat creation, pond and wetland design, ecological assessments, and water management planning to support biodiversity and sustainable land use.
Can you design ponds for wildlife and conservation?
Yes, ponds can be specifically designed to encourage biodiversity, supporting amphibians, insects, and aquatic plants through careful shaping, planting, and water management.
Do you provide advice on water quality and ecosystems?
Professional guidance can be provided on maintaining balanced ecosystems, improving water quality, and ensuring ponds remain healthy for both wildlife and fish.
Can you assist with planning and compliance?
Yes, support can be offered with planning considerations, environmental regulations, and ensuring projects meet relevant guidelines, particularly for larger or commercial developments.
What is a sustainable pond design?
A sustainable pond works in harmony with its environment, using natural filtration, appropriate planting, and efficient systems to reduce maintenance, chemical use, and energy consumption.
Coarse Fish Supplier
What fish do you supply?
A range of coarse and ornamental fish can be supplied, including koi, goldfish, golden orfe, and grass carp, depending on pond suitability.
How many fish can I put in my pond?
Stocking levels depend on pond size, filtration capacity, and oxygen levels. Overcrowding can lead to poor water quality, so stocking should always be carefully managed.
When is the best time to introduce fish to a pond?
Spring and early summer are ideal, as water temperatures are more stable and biological filtration systems are active.
Can you advise on fish health and care?
Yes, guidance can be provided on feeding, water quality, disease prevention, and general fish care to ensure a healthy and thriving pond.
Do you deliver and introduce fish?
Fish supply can include safe transport and professional introduction into the pond, ensuring minimal stress and proper acclimatisation.
What should I feed pond fish?
Fish should be fed a high-quality, species-appropriate diet. Feeding levels should vary with the seasons, with reduced feeding during colder months when fish metabolism slows.
