Rapid Deployment

When TMW Pond Services was commissioned to deliver a new hippo enclosure at Longleat Safari Park, the brief was clear: create a robust, high-performance habitat capable of housing four hippos – within a tight 8-week timeframe.

From the outset, the project demanded careful coordination, specialist knowledge, and a focus on both durability and animal welfare. Working to an accelerated programme, the team undertook the full construction of the enclosure, transforming the space into a purpose-built aquatic environment designed to withstand the unique pressures created by large, semi-aquatic mammals.

Structural Engineering & Waterproofing

At the centre of the build was an 80,000-litre hippo pool. Constructed from reinforced concrete, the structure was engineered to provide long-term strength and stability under constant load and movement. Once formed, the pool was fully lined with a fibreglass finish, creating a seamless, waterproof interior that is both hygienic and easy to maintain—an essential requirement for the day-to-day management of the enclosure.

Water Management & Project Completion

Alongside the structural works, significant attention was given to the water management systems that keep the habitat running efficiently. The installation included automated drainage valves, enabling controlled and straightforward emptying of the pool for maintenance. High-capacity filtration systems were integrated to maintain water clarity and hygiene, while an automated top-up system ensures consistent water levels are maintained at all times.

Despite the complexity of the works and the demanding schedule, the project was successfully completed within just eight weeks. The result is a durable, safe, and operationally efficient enclosure that supports both animal welfare and ease of maintenance. This project not only delivered a high-quality habitat for the animals but also highlights TMW Pond Services’ ability to plan, manage, and execute specialist aquatic construction projects to tight deadlines, without compromising on performance or reliability.
